Chp 5 Flashcards
Catalyst
A substance that increases the rate of chemical reactions and is not changed by the reaction
Enzymes
Biological catalyst
Proteins
Properties of enzymes
- can be used repeatedly
Speed up
The rate of chemical reactions
Enzyme action
The substance on which an enzyme works is called its substrate
What are the names of the molecules produced
Products
What’s the part that combines with a substrate called
Active site
Active site shape
Fits like a lock and key
Enzymes have an active site that only fits with them
Rise in temperature
Increase enzyme activity will rise until an optimum level which is temperature above 50 degrees
Why do enzymes denature
And stop functioning because most of them are proteins and when protein it’s structure is altered . Changes shape and can no longer connect to its substrate
How does the enzyme pH work
Each enzyme should have its on pH that it works it’s best in the stomach it’s more acidic and in the the most neutral
What happens if the pH increases or decreases to much
The enzyme activity will slow and eventually stop
