Anyone who applies pesticide or conducts any other type of pest control is responsible for the following.

  8. )Maintain uniform mixture at all times
  9. ) Clean pest control equipment thoroughly after use.
  10. )Avoid contamination of water by equipping lines with a double check valve.

Age Requirement

No pesticide handler under the 18yrs of age is permitted to mix or load a pesticide when any of the following apply

Protection of People, Animals, and Property

No pesticide application shall be made or continued when there is a reasonable chance of the following:

  1. )Hazard of contaminating the bodies or clothing of people not involved in the application process.
  2. )Possibility of damage to non-target crops, animals, or other public or private property

Protection of Bees

If one intends to apply a pesticide known to be toxic to bees, first consult with the CAC. Must also determine whether beekeepers with apiaries a mile of the application site have requested notice of such applications. If so the following must be notified to the beekeepers 48hrs in advance:

-Notification Regions
Butte, Glenn, and Tehama Counties have been established to receive apiary notification from the applicator to the to the CAC and nearby beekeepers.

-Citrus/Bee Protection Areas
Areas within one mile of any citrus planting that consist of one acre or more in Fresno, Kern, and Tulare have been designated as citrus/bee protection areas. All applicators in these counties should consult with the CAC.

  2. )Crop and acreage to be treated
  3. )Method of application
  4. ) Name and dosage rate of the pesticide to be applied
  5. )Procedure for the beekeeper to contact the applicator.
    * Warning period may be increased or decreased by the CAC.

Pesticide Storage
(Q4.1)

One must exercise personal control to prevent unauthorized contact with the pesticides at all times including one of the following

A

1.) Provide a person to maintain control over the pesticide containers and
application equipment
2.)Store the pesticide containers and application equipment in a locked enclosure.
*Liquid containers larger than 55gal. do not have to be in a locked enclosure if the containers enclosure is locked.

Pesticides must be stored in accordance with the labeling

Do not store pesticides with fertilizers since it may produce harmful chemical reactions or merely contamination.

Do not store pesticide near food, feed, seed or PPE.

Signal Word Signs

A

When pesticides contained are labeled with the signal word “Danger/Poison” or “Warning” one must post warning signs on or around the storage area, visible from any direction of approach, lettering must be readable from 25ft.-and in any alternate language that any employees are limited to speaking.

Pesticide Service Container Label Requirements

A service container is any other than the original labeled container that is used to hold, store, or transport concentrated or diluted pesticides. Service containers must include the following label information

A
  1. )Name and address of the person or firm responsible for the container
  2. )Identity of the pesticide
  3. )Signal Word
  • Only exception is when a service container is being used by a person in the business of farming on there own private property.
  • It is illegal to place or store pesticides in any container that commonly holds food, drink, or other household products.

Delivery of Pesticides

Pesticide containers must be delivered directly to one of the following

  1. )The property operator or their agent who is in charge.
  2. )The owner or a qualified person of a pest control business.
    * If non of the above are at the property, then the pesticides must be left in a locked enclosure.

Transportation of Pesticides

Pesticides must never be transported in the same vehicle with people, food, or animal feed

  1. )Containers must be secured to prevent spills into or off of the vehicle.
  2. )Cardboard containers must be protected from moisture.
  3. )All pesticides must have either the original registered product label or proper service container labeling.

Guidelines for burning pesticide bags

Less desirable disposal option allowed under an ag. burn permit issued to the property operator from the local air pollution control district.Includes on site field disposal of pruning’s, cardboard boxes, or bags that have been properly emptied.

  1. )Allowed only at the location specified on the ag. burn permit.
  2. )With minimal amount of smoke blowing over areas where people or domestic animals may be.
  3. )In an area that takes into account- Distances to homes, parks, schools, or businesses; wind speed and direction; temperature; length of time to burn material.

Bag Burning

  1. )Shall have a rock or similar noncombustible weight on top of the stack of bags.
  2. )By igniting the bottoms of bags.
  3. )While only authorized personnel are present and stay upwind of the fire/smoke.
  4. )Controlling the site until the fire is extinguished.
  5. )Only burn bags that were opened and emptied.

Guidelines for emptying pesticide bags

A
  1. )Open and empty the pesticide bag until no material can be poured, drained, or removed, and hold bag upside down for 5 seconds after continuous particle flow ceases
  2. )Straighten out seam to remove folds or wrinkles so that the bag is “flat”, again hold upside down for 5 seconds.
  3. )Shake the page twice.

*Pesticide bags that have been properly emptied will not be related a hazardous waste.

Container Rinsing Requirements

Containers that have held less than 28gal. of liquid pesticide must at minimum be triple rinsed and drained at the time of completion unless

Pesticide and Container Disposal

In some counties you may be required to obtain a special certificate or permit from the CAC before disposing of properly rinsed pesticide containers

Exemptions to some storage, transportation, and and disposal requirements.

  1. )Containers that hold or have held pesticides packaged, labeled, and used for private home use.
  2. )Containers that hold or have held pesticides registered as a spray adjuvant are exempt from rinse
  3. )Outer shipping containers that have not become contaminated with pesticides.
