Chp 10.-Minimal Exposure Pesticides Flashcards
Minimal Exposure Pesticide
Are those that because of specific hazards are not mitigated by instructions on their labels (e.g. pesticides with certain active ingredients.)
Conditions of Use
The following conditions apply to certain minimal exposure pesticides:
- )Applications of oxydemetonmethyl to ornamental landscape trees and shrubs must be made by trunk injection or soil injection methods.
- )Application of oxydemetonmethyl and propargite are not allowed within greenhouses.
Minimal Exposure Pesticides Safety Requirements
(Q10.1)
Because of specific hazards that are not mitigated by instructions on their labels, pesticides with certain active ingredients are classified as minimal exposure pesticides
These additional safety requirements take effect regardless of the toxicity category; employers are responsible for providing a changing area, decontamination facility, proper mixing equipment, PPE, including full-body chemical-resistant protective clothing and respiratory protection when necessary.
Changing Areas
For employees that mix, load, or apply pesticides that carry the signal word “Danger/Poison” or “Danger”, the employer must provide an area for employees to change clothes and wash themselves at the location where the workday is completed. It must have clean towels, soap, and adequate water for thorough washing, and a clean pesticide free area to store personal clothing whilst not in use.
Decontamination Facility
(Q10.3, Q10.2)
Employers must provide decontamination facilities at locations where minimal exposure pesticides are mixed or loaded, regardless of the toxicity category of the product being used.
1.) Employers must have sufficient water, soap, and single-use towels for routine washing of hands and face and for emergency eye flushing and washing of the entire body.
2.) Quality and temperature of the H20must not cause illness or injury when in contact with employee. This H20 must be store separately from water used for mixing with pesticides, unless the the tank holding mixing water is equipped with the proper valves to prevent back flow.
3.)One clean change of coveralls.
4.)Must be located at the mixing and loading site, and no more than 1/4 mile from the nearest point of vehicular access to other handlers, flaggers, etc.
100 ft. from mixing loading site when pesticides for non-ag production
5.Must not be in a treated area or under restricted-interval unless
1.) Each handler using the facility is working in the treated area/ container is used to enclose towels and coveralls/running tap water is used or is enclosed in container(eye flush)
Coveralls
A one or two piece garment of closely woven fabric that covers the entire body except for the head, hands, and feet.
1.)For employees that mix, load, or apply pesticides that carry the signal word “Danger
Poison” or “Danger”, clean coveralls must be provided.
2.)Employees are required to remove their coveralls at the end of each day. If an
employee does not return to the changing station they may remove the coveralls and
store them in a sealable container outside their living quarters for later return to the
employer.
3.)Employers must provide laundry services for the coveralls; informing the person or firm doing the laundry that they are receiving pesticide contaminated clothing and should be laundered separately. This does not apply for fumigants unless expressly required on the label.
Full body chemical-resistant protective clothing
Emergency Situations when Chemical-Resistant Protective Clothing must be available
- )Employees using a closed system or sealed water soluble packet while mixing loading, or transferring minimal exposure pesticides
- )Employees working as applicator or flaggers in enclosed vehicles.
- ) Applicators using vehicle mounted or towed equipment to inject of incorporate minimal exposure pesticides into the soil.
- )Applicators using equipment with vehicle mounted spray nozzles that are directed downward an located below the level of the employee.
Respiratory Protection
(Q10.4)
Must be worn when employees participate in
1.)Hand application or ground application of minimal exposure pesticides
2.)Flagging during an application of a minimal exposure pesticide, except flaggers in
enclosed vehicles.
3.)Mixing and loading dry formulations of minimal exposure pesticides, except when loaders use sealed water soluble packets.
The following employers are exempt from respiratory protection
- ) Applicators using vehicle mounted or towed equipment to inject of incorporate minimal exposure pesticides into the soil.
- )Applicators using equipment with vehicle mounted spray nozzles that are directed downward an located below the level of the employee.
