Amnion
membrane enveloping embryo containing amniotic fluid
APGAR
test performed after birth to determine how well the baby is breathing and how well the heart is working.
Bartholin’s Gland
glands lateral to the vagina that produce mucus for lubrication of the vagina
Blastocyst
A morula that has traveled down the uterine tube to the uterus and is invaded with fluid. It then implants into the wall of the uterus.
Cowper’s glands
Bulbourethral glands.
ductus arteriosus
The connection in the fetus between the pulmonary trunk and the aorta.
ductus venosus
A blood vessel that allows most of the blood to bypass the liver in the fetus.
Embryo
A group of cells, called the inner cell mass, that develops from the blastocyst during the embryonic prenatal period to become the fetus.
formen ovale
A hole in the fetal heart between the right atrium and the left atrium
Oogenesis
The process of egg cell formation.
Ovulation
The process by which the ovaries release one ovum (egg) approximately every 28 days.
placenta
An organ located between the mother and the fetus that envelops the fetus during development. The placenta permits the absorption of nutrients and oxygen. In some cases, harmful substances such as viruses are absorbed through the placenta.
primary germ layer
The layers of an inner cell mass: the ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm.
seminiferous tubules
Tubes located in the lobules of the testes that contain spermatogenic cells.
spermatogenesis
The process of sperm cell formation
