Chp 3: Biopsychology Flashcards
Biopsychology
The relationship between your body, mind, brain and your behavior
CT scan
Computed tomography
FMRI scan
Functional magnetic resonance imaging
Nature
Environment prone to
Example: Overweight because of family genetics
Nurture
The way you were raised
Example: Overweight because you were raised with poor eating habits
Sensory Neurons
Communicate info from environment to central nervous system
Motor neurons
Communication going out from the central nervous system to muscles
Interneurons
Communicate info from one neuron to another, everything in-between sensory and motor
Soma
Cell body
Dendrites
Tree like branches at beginning of neuron
Axon
Long cable where electrical impulses from the neuron travel away to be received by other neurons
Myelin Sheath
Protective layer around the axon so it’s easier for impulses to travel
Terminal buttons
Branching ends of neurons that contain neurotransmitters
Glial cells
Support cells for neurons, remove cell waste, clean the brain by secreting chemicals and keep the chemical environment stable
Central Nervous System
Brain and spinal cord
