Chp 2 Basic Atomic Theory Flashcards
Atom
The simplest part of an element which still retains the properties of that element
Ion
Charged atom
Element
A substance which cannot be dived any further by chemical means
Compound
Two or more elements combined chemically
Molecule
Two or more atoms combined chemically
Atomic number
The unique identifying number for an element. It is equal to the number of protons
Mass number
Mass of the atom
It is equal to the number of protons added to the number of neutrons.
Isotopes
Atoms with the same atomic number but a different mass number
Relative atomic mass
The average mass of the naturally occurring isotopes of an atom, taking into account their abundances, relative to 1/12th of the mass of an atom of Carbon-12 which is defined as having a mass of 12
