Keeping apparatus in a state of usefulness. Intended to reduce unexpected and catastrophic failures
Repair def
To restore that which is inoperable
Drivers can fix/inspect
Batteries Braking system Coolant system Electrical system Fuel system Hydraulic fluids Oil Tires Steering Belts Tools, appliances, equipment
Guideline for checks
Inspection finds a problem Driver documents per policy Driver notifies immediate supervisor Problem is followed up on per policy Immediate if NFPA 1911 serious issue
Cleaning
Steam cleaning may remove lubrication
May need to relube after a heavy cleaning
New apparatus need gentle washing with cold water for 6 months to harden paint
Use garden hose with no nozzle
Work top down
Dry with chamois or squeegee
Cleaning glass
Only use paper towel. Shop towels may have grit in them.
Cleaning interior
Vacuum, use soap or cleaner, no solvents, ventilate, careful around electronics, keep hinges and slides free of debris, lubricate per mfg
Waxing
Not for first 6 months
Wash and dry first
Follow mfg, some new ones don’t need it
CDL
License to drive vehicles 26,001 lbs or more
Circle or walk around method
Start at driver door and go clockwise. Includes:
Operational readiness inspection
Pretrip road worthiness inspection
Operational readiness inspection
Inspect apparatus and equipment on it that its in place, clean, and ready for use
Pretrip road worthiness inspection
Visual inspection that major chassis components are present and working
Functional check
Operating a system or component to make sure it works
Park outside, weather permitting
Approaching the vehicle
Look for body damage or sever lean
Terrain its parked on
Fluid leaks
