Chp 10 Cardiovascular, Immune, Lymphatic Systems and Blood Flashcards
Organs and Anatomic Structures of Cardivascular System
Heart
Muscular cone-shaped organ the size of a fist, located behind the sternum (breast bone) and between the lungs.
The pumping action of the heart circulars blood throughout the body
Atrioventricular Valves
Consists of the tricuspid and mitral valves, which lie between the right atrium and the right vertical.
The valves of the heart keep blood flowing in one direction
Semilunar Valves
Pulmonary and aortic valve located between the right ventrical and the pulmonary artery and between the left ventricale and the aorta.
Pericardium
Two-layer sac surrounding the heart, consisting of an external fibrous and an internal serous layer
Helps faciliates movemnt of the heart with fluid it produces
Epicardium
Outer lining covering the heart; also part of the pericardium
Myocardium
Middle, think, muscular layer of the heart
Endocardium
Inner lining oof the heart
Blood vessels
Tubelike structures
Carries blood throughout the body
Arteries
Blood vessels
Carries blood away from the heart
Arterioles
Smallest arteries
Carries blood away from the heart
Aorta
Largest artery in the body
Veins
Blood vessels
Carries blood back to the heart
Venules
Smallest veins
Carries blood back to the heart
Venules
Smallest veins
Carries blood back to the heart
Venae Cavae
Largest veins in the body
Carries blood back to the heart
Capillaries
Microscopic blood vessels that connect artioles with venules.
Materials are passed bewteen tissue through capillary walls
Compostition of Blood
Blood
Fluid cirulated through the heart, ateries, capillaries, and veins
Made of plasma and formed elements
Plasma
Clear, straw-colored, liquid portion of blood in which cells are suspended.
Approximately 90% the other 10% is composed solutes. 55% of blood volume
Serum
Clear, watery fluid portion of the blood that remains after a clot has formed
Cells (formed elements)
Production of new blood cells takes place in bone marrow
the spongy tissue inside some bones
Erythrocytes
Red blood
Carries oxygen
Leukocytes
White blood cells
Combats infections and spread to inflammation
