Chp 1 Flashcards
Social Psychology
study of way people’s thoughts/feelings/behavs influenced by real/imaginary presence of other people
construal
their construal of their social environment means.the way they perceive/comprehend/interpret the social world.how one CONSTRUES a situation….a girl kisses Max, does Max see it as an awakening of romantic interest on girl’s part? Or just an aloof, sisterly, platonic expression of affection? Or does he see it as a sign of interest but she wants to go slow?.it’s all in how one CONSTRUES the situation
social psychology diff from sociology/personality psych
soc - general laws/theories about societies, not individualssocial psych - psychological processes people HAVE IN COMMON that make them susceptible to social influencepersonality psych - studies individual differences
naive realism
special type of construal.conviction all of us have that we perceive things “as they really are”.we assume other reasonable people see things the same way that we do.”even when each side recognizes that the other side perceives the issues differently, each thinks that the other side is biased while they themselves are objective and that their own perceptions of reality should provide basis for settlement.both israelis and palestinians understand intellectually that the other side perceives issues differently, but both sides resist compromise, fearing that their “biased” opponent will benefit more than they
fundamental attribution error
tendency to overestimate the extent to which people’s behaviour stems from internal/dispositional factors and to underestimate te role of situational factors
gestalt psychology
asserts we should study the subjective way an object appears tin people’s minds (the gestalt or whole) rather than the combination of all the tiny details.according to gestalts, impossible to understand way an object is perceived simply by studying the building blocks of perception
gestalt psychology as applied to social psych
realizing importance of taking the perspective of people in any social situation to see how they construe (e.g. perceive, interpret, distory) this social environment
