What is the purpose of it ?
Definitive test offered to work who are at high risk of DS based on screening results
What is it ?
A sample of cells is taken from the placenta (nutrients for baby) attached to womb and sent to the laboratory for testing.
How is this performed ?
It performed by an obstetrician under US guidance. It is mostly through an injection and local anaesthetic through the abdomen or cervix
What are the 3 risk/complications ?
- Risk of miscarriage:2%, 2. Risk of infection and 3. Risk of injury to baby
What is the benefit ?
99% definitive
What are the important signs to look at for: safety netting ? (4)
- Pelvic/abdominal pain, 2. Fever, 3. Watery loss from vagina 4. PV Bleeding
