Cholesterol meds Flashcards
What drug inhibits HMG-CoA?
Statins
What is the primary therapeutic effect of statins?
Reduce synthesis of endogenous cholesterol by inhibiting the rate limiting step
What is the secondary positive therapeutic effect of statins?
Decreased LDL synthesis –> increased LDL receptor synthesis –> increased LDL catabolism
What is ezetimibe?
Cholesterol absorption inhibitor
How do bile acid resins decrease LDL?
Exogenously (increased fecal loss of bile salt-bound LDL)
Endogenously (liver uses more cholesterol to make more bile salt)
What are examples of bile acid resins?
Cholestyramine
Colestipol
Colesevelam
Which type of cholesterol drugs have the highest increase in HDL?
Niacin (B3)
What are gemfibrozil, clofibrate, bezafibrate, fenofibrate?
Fibrates
What is the effect of fibrates?
Up-regulates LPL –> increased TG clearance –> small decrease in LDL and small increase in HDL
