cholesterol Flashcards
1
Q
what are the main sources
A
body>liver
food>animal products (meat/poultry/dairy)
-saturated and tran fats means more made in liver
2
Q
functions?
A
cell membrane support
bile production for digestion and absorption
vitamin D production-when sun rays hit skin
hormone production-e.g. estrogen
3
Q
method of transport?
A
-in lipoproteins in the blood
4
Q
what are lipoproteins?
A
-sphere shaped assemblies, containing lipids and proteins that keep cholesterol separate from the blood
5
Q
what are the 2 types of cholesterol?
A
LDL and HDL
6
Q
what is LDL?
A
- low density lipoprotein
- more cholesterol than proteins
- ‘bad’>plaque that clogs arteries
7
Q
what is HDL?
A
- high density lipoprotein
- more protein than cholesterol
- ‘good’>removes LDL from arteries, carries to liver to be broken down and removed
8
Q
what is atherosclerosis?
A
- when a clot forms and blocks the artery which limits the flow of oxygenated blood to organs/body
- can cause heart attacks/stroke
- LDL level is higher than HDL
9
Q
how to control cholesterol?
A
- exercise
- eat healthy>limit trans/saturated fats
- lose excess weight
- sterol supplements
10
Q
what is cholesterol?
A
- organic molecule
- makes steroid hormones
- found in body tissues
- lipid (fat)
- is biosynthesised
- important for cell membrane
- candle shavings
