What is a cholesteatoma?
A
Non-cancerous growth of keratinising squamous epithelium that are ‘trapped’ within the skull base causing local destruction.

What is this a presentation of?
5-15 years old, cleft palate, foul non-resolving discharge in ear, conductive hearing loss, headache, pain.

What would indicate CNS invasion of a cholesteatoma?
A
Facial nerve palsy and vertigo

How is a cholesteatoma investigated?
A
- Otoscopy - ‘attic crust’ on pars flaccida
2. MRI/CT of temporal bone

What is the management for a cholesteatoma?
A
Refer to ENT for mastoidectomy and tympanoplasty
