CHOLERA Flashcards
What causes cholera
vibrio cholerae bacterium
how does vibrio cholarae cause disease cholera
the bacterium produces toxin which can cause profuse watery diarrhoea and vomiting and death due to dehydration, if left untreated
transmission of vibrio cholerae
primarily by drinking water or eating food that has been contaminated by the feces
explain the morphology of vibrio cholerae
- Short, curved or comma shaped
- Gram negative rod with rounded or pointed ends
- actively motile with a single polar flagellum
- non sporing
- Non-capsulated
- Non acid fast
what are the culture characteristics of vibro cholera
- strongly aerobic
- Optimum temperature for its growth is 37 c
- PH is 6.4 -9.6 favours better growth
- NaCl conc. 0.5- 1.0 %
- It is quite sensitive to drying, exposure to sunright and extreme changes in PH
- It is also inhibited by normal intestinal flora
result of cuturing cholera on macconkey agar
shows colourless colonies
result of blood agar culture on cholera
beta hemolysis
what transport media is used to transport cholera sample to lab
Venkata raman (VR) MEDIA
what selective media is used in cholera vibrio culture
Thiosulphate citrate bile and sucrose (TCBS)
what enrichment media is used
alkaline peptone water, taurocholate peptone water
what planting media is used
alkaline bile salt agar medium, monsur galatin taurocholate trypticase tellurite agar medium.
