Cholera Flashcards
Cholera is
an acute painless rice watery diarrhoeal illness of the small intestine caused by the bacterium “vibrio cholerae”
vibrio cholerae characteristics (5)
Gram-negative Aerobic bacillus Highly motile Curved rods (comma shaped) Single polar flagellum
Cholera Transmission
Fecal-oral ,through contaminated food or water
Cholera pathogenesis
releases an enterotoxin, (choleraregen ) (cholera toxin),which activate CAMP resulting in hypersecretion of water and electrolytes (rice water stool).
Cholera COMPLICATIONS (5)
- Sever dehydration
- shock
- Electrolytes imbalance
- Renal failure
- Death
Cholera Laboratory diagnosis by
stool cuture (TCBS media).
Cholera Treatment (2)
Rehydration is key
azithromycin, ciprofloxacin
Cholera Prevention
Interrupt the fecal-oral transmission
by:
Proper sewage disposal.
Chlorination of water.
Hand washing
Vaccine
