Why are children at risk of abuse?

What is child protection?
Child Protection is the process of protecting individual children identifies as either suffering or likely to suffer significant harm as a result of abuse or neglect.
It involves measures and structures designed to prevent and respond to abuse and neglect.

Why is the child in A&e? Are they frequently in A&E? what do they come in for? YOU CAN'T AGE BRUISES What happened?!! ask both the parents! Are both the parents in? Has a social worker been involved at all? substance abuse, mental health issues in the family
IF you don’t know:
- tell your consultant/registrar
- get social workers involved
What if a family is screaming at the child and they come in?
Call the police

What do IRDs involve?
3 core agencies:

What can you not do?
Don’t promise confidentiality
Do no investigate
Do not take statements
What should you do?
Do listen and clarify
Do write down exactly what the child has said and their actions
Do note your own observations/ recall
Do follow your agency’s referral guideline
At which age can’t kids consent to sex?
