What is the basic criteria for ADHD?
- One or both of the following
1. Inattention: 6 of 9 criteria (5 of 9 greater than 17 yo): - Poor attention or careless mistakes, poor sustained attention, doesn’t listen, doesn’t follow through, difficulty organizing, avoids, loses things, easily distracted, forgetful.
2. Hyperactivity and impulsivity: 6 of 9 criteria: Fidgets/squirms, leaves seat, runs about, can’t play quietly, talks excessively, blurts out, can’t wait turn, interrupts
New—symptom onset prior to age 12
- The symptoms actually cause difficulties in the individuals life
- The symptoms are not caused by another disorder
What are the basic criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder?
- Both of the following:
1. Persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction - Poor reciprocity, poor nonverbal communication, relationships are not at expected age level
2. Restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviors, interests or activities - Stereotyped movements (Flapping, rocking, flailing arms), inflexible routines, need for sameness, restricted/fixated interests, hyper/hypo-reactivity to sensory input
- New—symptom present in early developmental period (used to have specific age)
- The symptoms actually cause difficulties in the individuals life
- The symptoms are not better explained by another disorder
What are the basic criteria for Separation Anxiety Disorder?
Developmentally inappropriate and excessive fear concerning separation from attachment figures (parents)—need 3 of the following:
- Excessive distress when anticipating or experiencing separation from home/parental figure
- Persistent and excessive worry about losing major attachment figure
- Persistent and excessive worry about untoward event
- Persistent reluctance or refusal to go out (school)
- Persistent and excessive worry about being alone
- Persistent reluctance to sleep away from home with attachment figure
- Repeated nightmares
- Repeated physical complaints
- Lasts at least 1 month in kids/teens (6 months in adults)

-Manic episode: distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable mood AND increased energy/activities lasting at least 1 week (unless severe enough for hospitalization).
