Anti-Anxiety Drugs-Pechnick Flashcards
1
Q
Benzodiazepines
A
- Well absorbed orally
2
Q
Which benzos have active metabolites and long effective half-lives?
A
Diazepam, chlordiazepoxide, clonazepam
3
Q
Midazolam
A
Short half-life and used for conscious anesthesia
4
Q
Which benzos do not form active metabolites?
A
Oxazepam and lorazepam
5
Q
What is the MOA of benzos?
A
Increase the frequency of Cl channel opening in response to GABA
6
Q
What are some pharmacologic effects of benzos?
A
- CNS depression
- High therapeutic index
- Reduce anxiety
- Produce sedation
- Promote sleep
- Not analgesic
- Tolerance develops to sedative effects but not anxiolytic effects
7
Q
Midazolam
A
Used for induction of anesthesia or conscious sedation
8
Q
What are some SE of benzos?
A
- Confusion and difficulty with intellectual functioning (most common cause of reversible confusional states in elderly is incorrect benzo use)
- Anterograde amnesia
9
Q
Drug interactions of benzos?
A
Unlike barbiturates, benzos do not induce hepatic microsomal enzymes
10
Q
Busiprone
A
- Different from other anxiolytics
- Does not interact with GABA receptors
- Interacts with serotonin receptors instead
- Anxio-selective
- Few SE and no additive effect in combo w/ethanol
11
Q
Which drugs are used for tx of performance anxiety and stage fright?
A
Propranolol and atenolol
