How are the different forms of child abuse defined in the DSM?
Physical: non-accidental injury bruises- severe fracture- death. discipline if bodily injury.
Sexual: sexual activity- gratification to adult who has responsibility for child
Psychological: verbal or symbolic acts resulting in psych harm
Neglect: egregious act or omission by caregiver
Describe some interventions for child abuse.
Group therapy is particularly useful for adolescents. Dyadic treatment is aimed at enhancing or repairing relationships within the family. Individual psychotherapy can be helpful with an emphasis on displaying a trusting relationship through the therapeutic alliance.
Describe some treatment issues for those who have suffered sexual abuse.
Trust is a major barrier, as often perpetrator an adult known to them- important of therapist.
Often feel inappropriate guilt and a sense of responsibility for what happened to them. Victims of abuse are at elevated risk of being further abused.
Describe the major findings from the Senate Community Affairs References Committee.
Assessed out of home care for children and found a number of places provide questionable care including orphanages, detention, group home cottages, foster care. Found that historically sexual abuse is the norm and that people that go through the system of out of home care rarely have no psychological damage.
