Chest X-ray Flashcards
What are the types of CXR?
AP
PA
What is the difference between AP + PA?
AP
- film taken anterior -> posterior
- heart is larger (cannot comment that acurately on cardiomegaly)
PA
- film taken posterior -> anterior
- heart is smaller
What is the first thing you do?
Details
- name
- date taken
- AP or PA
How do you assess the adequacy of the film?
RIPE
Rotation
Inspiration
Penetration
Exposure
How do you comment on rotation?
Clavicles should be level
Clavicles should be equidistant from spinous processes
How do you comment on inspiration?
6 anterior ribs
8 posterior ribs
How do you comment on penetration?
See vertebral bodies through cardiac shadow
How do you comment on exposure?
Need to see
- above apices
- below costophrenic angles
- either side of chest wall
What is the approach for looking at the CXR?
ABCDE
What is A?
Airways
What do you look for in A?
Trachea
- central (follows spinous processes)
- free of foreign bodies
What level should the carina divide at?
T4
What is B?
Breathing
What do you look for in B?
Lung markings - go all the way to pleural edge
What is C?
Cardiac
