What type of joint is the manubrial-sternal joint?
secondary cartilaginous
Which ribs are true ribs?
1-7
Which joint is primary cartilaginous?
1st sternocostal joint
What are the two neck muscles that support the rib cage?
- Sterno-cleidomastoid
2. Scalenes muscles - anterior, medius, posterior
what is atypical about the 1st rib?
very curved, has a tubercle for scalenus anterior, single facet on head
what is atypical about 11th and 12th?
no tubercles
do not attach to anything (free floating)
Which vertebrae are atypical?
1st, 10th, 11th and 12th
What is pump handle movement of the chest wall?
Sternum moves upwards and forwards due to movement of true ribs
What is bucket handle movement of the chest wall?
Ribs move out to the side - due to the movement of the false ribs
What is the blood supply to the chest wall?
- Anterior - internal thoracic arteries
2. Posterior - descending thoracic aorta
What is the venous drainage of the chest wall?
- Anterior - internal thoracic veins
2. Posterior - azygos veins (azygos on RHS, hemiazygos on LHS)
What is the lymphatic drainage of the chest wall?
Lots of lymph nodes
- Anteriorly - drainage into brachiomediastinal trunk
- Posteriorly - drainage into thoracic duct.
What is the nerve supply to the chest wall?
Intercostal muscles innervated by intercostal nerves (T2-T12)
1,2 and 7-11 intercostal nerves are atypical
