What is chest tube?
A tube that is inserted through the chest wall into the chest cavity- pleural space.
What is the purpose of the trochar?
To stabilise the tube during insertion. Got to remove it once inserted
What is the purpose of the spiral hole at the distal end of the tube aka eyelets?
To drain air/ fluid, must be within the chest cavity.
When should we insert the chest tube into the pleural space?
- to drain air and fluid into an external closed sterile system to re-establish negative pressure in pleural space for re-expansion of the lungs. Eg, pleural effusion
When should we insert chest tube in the mediastinal space?
To drain fluid or blood around the heart after cardiac surgery to prevent cardiac tamponade
What is pleural space/ pleural cavity?
Potential space between 2 pleural membranes, visceral pleura and parietal pleura
What is the name of the outer lining of the lung?
Visceral pleura
What is the name of the inner lining of the thoracic cavity?
Parietal pleura
How many mls of pleura fluid acts as lubrication between parietal pleura and visceral pleura?
Less than 25mls
What does the MOH & the public health care family consist of?
Statutory Boards and professional bodies, MOH holdings ( Agencies/ Shared services) and Public healthcare clusters.
