Chest: Patient preparation, patient position, and tube set up Flashcards
What items may have to be removed from the anatomy of interest during a chest x-ray
long earrings, necklaces, and clothing artifacts.
Bulky clothing items such as hoodies, anything with zippers or buttons
What should you do with any items the patient takes off for the exam?
place all of their items in a secure designated area.
What is an ambulatory patient?
a patient that is not bedridden and can walk around on their own
What is a non-ambulatory patient?
A patient that is bed ridden and cannot walk around on their own
In what position would you shoot a chest x-ray for an ambulatory patient?
Upright or seated erect
What are the proper steps to take if a patient who requires a chest x-ray is non-ambulatory?
Determine whether air-fluid levels are critical to diagnosis
may have to substitute with a decubitus position of the patient cannot sit upright (we dont really have to worry about this for the purpose of this class)
What size image receptor will we use for a PA and Lateral chest?
14 x 17
What should the collimation be for a PA chest
adjust the radiation field to 17 inches lengthwise and 1 inch beyond the lateral shadows but no more than 14 inches
Essentially 17 (length) x 14 (height)
What dimensions are used for a crosswise IR?
14 length x 17 height
only used for hypersthenic patients
What’s the recommended SID for a chest radiography and why?
72 inches
minimize magnification of the heart and increase spatial resolution
Where do ID markers go?
they must be put in the exposure field but clear of the anatomy of interest
What are some ways to practice radiation protection for a chest x-ray
close collimation
gonad shielding should be used according to state regulations or to reduce patient anxiety
optimum technique factors
What are the most critical patient instructions for a chest x-ray?
respiration instructions
What are the respiration instructions for a chest x-ray?
Deep breathe in
breathe out
deep breathe in, hold expose
breathe out
why would two separate radiographs be taken?
in order to demonstrate pneumothorax
diaphragm movement
presence of foreign body
atelectasis
