Chest Pain Flashcards
Where do the pre-synaptic fibres of the sympathetic system leave the spine?
T1 to L2/3
What makes up the cardiac plexus? (intertwining of nerves)
sympathetic fibres
parasympathetic fibres
visceral afferent fibres
Where are the ganglions involved in parasympathetic impulses to organs?
On the surface of the organs
What is a ganglion?
A collection of nerve cell bodies
What cranial nerves are the parasympathetic fibres carried in?
cranial nerves 3, 7, 9 and 10
What cranial nerve is responsible for conveying parasympathetic fibres to the heart?
cranial nerve 10
What are the only spinal nerves carrying parasympathetic fibres?
sacral spinal nerves
give examples of visceral afferents affecting the heart
baroreceptor reflex - goes along side the vagus nerve
cardiac visceral afferent - goes along side the sympathetic
What is are the characteristics of visceral pain?
dull
aching
nauseating
poorly localised
what are brain sulcus?
grooves
what are brain gyrus?
outpouchings of the brain
somatic central chest pain
Shingles (Herpes Zoster)
muscle, joint and bone
Parietal pleura
causes of viscera dull chest pain
aorta trachea oesophagus heart abdominal viscerae
what drains into the azygous vein
the veins in each of the intercostal spaces, the azygous vein drains into the superior vena cava and the bit that goes across into the vena cava is also the azygous
how do you find the vagus nerve?
on the right it goes along the side of the trachea
on the left it loops across the aorta
