Matter
A measurement that reflects the amount of matter
Mass
A measure of the amount of matter and the Earth’s gravitational pull on it
Weight
Any substance that has a definite composition; they also make up matter
Chemical
Organized process used by scientists to do research
Scientific Method
Act of gathering information, existing knowledge, either qualitative or quantitative
Observation
Information/ Data that describes color, odor, shape, or some physical characteristic
Qualitative Data
Data that is numerical information
Quantitative Data
An educated guess or a guess for what has been observed
Hypothesis
A set of controlled observations that test the hypothesis
Experiment
A quantity or condition that can have more than one value; it has two types
Variable
A variables that is changes but can be controlled
Independent Variable
A variable whose value changes in response to a change in the independent variable
Dependent Variable
A factor that is not allowed to change during an experiment
Constant
A standard for comparison
Control
A judgement based on information obtained during an experiment
Conclusion
A visual, verbal/ or mathematical explanation of experimental data
Model
When a hypothesis is supported by many, many experiments
Theory
A summary of accepted facts of nature
Scientific law
Seeks to gain knowledge for the sake of knowledge itself
Pure research
Undertaken to solve a specific problem
Applied Research
The practical use of scientific information concerned with making improvements in human life and the world around us
