Chemistry Vocabulary Flashcards
Anything that has mass and takes up space
Matter
A measurement that reflects the amount of matter
Mass
A measure of the amount of matter and the Earth’s gravitational pull on it
Weight
Any substance that has a definite composition; they also make up matter
Chemical
Organized process used by scientists to do research
Scientific Method
Act of gathering information, existing knowledge, either qualitative or quantitative
Observation
Information/ Data that describes color, odor, shape, or some physical characteristic
Qualitative Data
Data that is numerical information
Quantitative Data
An educated guess or a guess for what has been observed
Hypothesis
A set of controlled observations that test the hypothesis
Experiment
A quantity or condition that can have more than one value; it has two types
Variable
A variables that is changes but can be controlled
Independent Variable
A variable whose value changes in response to a change in the independent variable
Dependent Variable
A factor that is not allowed to change during an experiment
Constant
A standard for comparison
Control
A judgement based on information obtained during an experiment
Conclusion
A visual, verbal/ or mathematical explanation of experimental data
Model
When a hypothesis is supported by many, many experiments
Theory
A summary of accepted facts of nature
Scientific law
Seeks to gain knowledge for the sake of knowledge itself
Pure research
Undertaken to solve a specific problem
Applied Research
The practical use of scientific information concerned with making improvements in human life and the world around us
Technology
Something known to happen without error but doesn’t explain how it happens
Scientific Law
Steps of Scientific Method
Observation, Hypothesis, Experiment, Analysis, and Conclusion

Liter
Expresses numbers a a multiple of two factors; a number between 1 & 10 and ten raised to a power or exponent
Scientific Notation
A ratio of equivalent values used to express the same quantity in different units
Conversion Factor
A method of problem solving that focuses on the units used to describe matter
Dimensional Analysis
Include all known digits plus one estimated digit
Significant Figures
A visual display of data
Graph
Chart used for showing percentages
Circle Graph/ Pie Chart
Graph that can be used to show how quantities vary with factors like time, location, or temperature
