What does baking powder contain?
Sodium hydrogencarbonate
Baking powder is used for baking cakes. It contains sodium hydrogencarbonate which brakes down when heated to form carbon dioxide gas. What is the word and symbol equation for this reaction?
Sodium hydrogencarbonate————> sodium carbonate+ carbon dioxide + water
Heat
2NaHCO3——-> Na2CO3+ CO2+H2O
Heat
( Emulsifiers are molecules that have two different ends: Hydrophilic end
Water loving-that firm chemical bonds with water but not with oils
A hydrophobic end
water hating-that forms chemical bonds with oils but not with water
Lecithin (an commonly emulsifier…)
Commonly used in food
How are esters made?
They are made by reacting alcohol with organic acid
What are esters?
Esters are chemicals with pleasant smells. They occur naturally but can be made in laboratory
What are solvents?
A solvent is a liquid that dissolves substances
Crude oil
Is a mixture of hydrocarbons
Destillation
A process that can be used to separate a pure liquid from a mixture of liquids. It works when the different liquids have different boiling points.
What are hydrocarbons
Are compounds made from carbon and hydrogen atoms joined by colvalent bonds
Saturated?
They have only single bonds t.e.x alkanes
Unsaturated?
Have a double bonds t.e.x alkenes
