Chemistry test 3 (Sc9) Flashcards
What is the empirical formula?
The empirical formula of a compound is the
simplest whole-number ratio of atoms of
each element present in a compound
What does the Molecular formula show?
The molecular formula shows the actual numbers of
the atoms of each element in the compound.
What are the steps of the crucible experiment?
Find the mass of crucible + lid
Find the mass of crucible + lid + magnesium
Heat crucible + lid + magnesium
Lift the lid occasionally to allow oxygen in
Heat until there is no further change in mass
Allow the crucible to cool
Find mass of crucible + lid + magnesium oxide
Find mass of magnesium element and oxygen
element separately
Why was the crucible heated until no further
change?
To make sure that all the magnesium had
reacted.
Why did the lid remained closed during the
experiment and only lifted occasionally?
To minimize loss of magnesium oxide
What is solute?
The solid that dissolves is called the solute.
What is a solvent?
The liquid that does the dissolving is called the solvent.
what is a solution?
A solution is a type of mixture that is made when one substance
dissolves and mixes fully with another
What is a closed system?
a closed system means during the reaction no new substances are formed
What is a non-enclosed system?
When new substances are formed or if a substance such as a gas can escape
What is electrolysis?
electrolysis the decomposition of a compound using electricity
Is anode positive or negative?
Positive
Is Cathode positive or negative?
Negative
Is Cation positive or negative?
Positive
Is anion positive or negative?
Negative
