Chemistry Test#1 Grade 9 Flashcards
Colour and Lustre
The light a subtsance reflects gives it colour and lustre
Conductivity
Conductivity is the ability of a substance to conduct electricity or heat. A substance that conducts electricity or heat is called a conductor. A substance with little or no conductivity.
Density
Density is the amount of mass given a volume of a substance
Ductility
Any solid that can be stretched into a long wire is said to be ductile
Hardness
Is a substance’s ability to rising being scratched. Hardness is usually measured on the mosh hardness scale from 1-10
Malleability
A substance that can be poured or rolled into sheets
Viscosity
The resistance of a fluid to flow
Formula for density, Mass, volume
D= m/v. M=vxd. V=m/d
Classifying matter
Matter>pure substances>mixtures> hetro and homo mixtures> solutions (homo) mechanical and suspensions (hetro)
Pure substances> compounds and elements
H20
One red circle with 2 white circles
Chemical properties
~ describes the ability of a substance rot change into a new substance or substances
~Include how a substance reacts with other substances (ex: acids or water) or how it reacts to heat or light
~chemical properties can only be observed when a chemical change occurs
Chemical properties include
~ absorbs heat in a reaction
~Combustible - reacts rapidly with oxygen to produce heat and light
~forms gas when heated
~reacts with acid
~reacts with water
~emits heat during reaction
~emits light during a reaction
~forms a precipitate (solid) in a solution
Physical Changes
A change in which the chemical composition does not change
~building and breaking/ change of state
~dissolving/ water spots in shower
~change of state/ solid, liquid,gas
Chemical Changes
~colour change
~odour chnage
~heat or light change
~gas formed (bubbles)
~precipitate formed (liquid+liquid= solid)
~new substance formed (nail rusting)
~not reversible
calculate percent error
predicted value - actual value
then divide the answer by the actual value x100
