Chemistry of Life Flashcards
What are ionic bonds?
Ionic Bonds = The force of attraction between ions of opposite charges (a metal and a non-metal)
What are covalent bonds?
The atoms form a molecule by sharing one, two or three pairs of their outer shell electrons.
What are hydrogen bonds?
The polar covalent bonds that form between hydrogen atoms, giving rise to this 3rd type of bond.
What do inorganic compounds lack?
Inorganic compounds lack carbon, held together by ionic or covalent bonds.
What is a cation?
Cations are ions that carry a positive charge.
What is an anion?
Anions are ions that carry a negative charge.
What is an electrolyte?
Electrolytes have a natural positive or negative electrical charge when dissolved in water. They help your body regulate chemical reactions, maintain the balance between fluids inside and outside your cells, and more
Explain the importance of electrolytes and their significance to health.
Electrolytes are essential for basic life functioning, such as maintaining electrical neutrality in cells and generating and conducting action potentials in the nerves and muscles.
What is the blood’s pH?
Normal blood pH = 7.35-7.45.
What does Carbohydrates provide?
Examples?
Carbohydrates provide most of the chemical energy needed to generate ATP.
Examples include monosaccharides, disaccharides, and polysaccharides.
Give examples of lipids?
Tryclicerides, Phospholipids, Steroids, Eicosanoids
Purpose of Phospholipids? (Lipids)
- Phospholipids are important cell membrane components.
Purpose of Tryclicerides? (Lipids)
- Tryclicerides protect, insulate, and provide energy.
Purpose of Steroids? (Lipids)
- Steroids are important in cell membrane structure, regulating sexual functions, maintaining normal blood sugar levels, aiding lipid digestion and absorption, and helping bone growth.
Purpose of Eicosanoids (Lipids)
- Eicosanoids modify hormone responses, contribute to inflammation, dilate airways and regulate body temperature.
