Chemistry: Matter/Cgem&PjysicalProperties Flashcards
Matter
Anything that has mass and volume and takes up space
Chemistry
Study of matter and how it changes
(Pure) Substances
Matter that always has same composition and properties
Elements and compounds
Substances can be classified into
Element
Substance that can NOT be broken down into anything smaller. (All found on the Periodic Table of Elements)
Compounds
Substance made of two or more elements
Elements are made of
Atoms
Molecule
Made of different elements and/ or compounds
Chemical formulas
Shows how many atoms of each element are in the basic units of a substance
Mixture
A combination of two or more pure substances. Can be separated into their parts.
Heterogeneous
Mostly solid substances that are NOT mixed well
Immiscible
Two or more liquids that do NOT mix into each other (oil and water).
Homogeneous
Substances ARE mixed well
Miscible
Two or more liquids that DO dissolve into each other (gases can also be dissolved)
Solution
Substances that dissolve and form a homogeneous mixture
Suspension
Heterogeneous mixture that separates into layers over time
Colloid
Contains some particles that are intermediate in size between the small and large particles
2 ways to separate mixtures
Distillation and Filtration
Distillation
Separating materials based on their boiling point
Filtration
Separates materials based on the size of their particles
Starting materials in a chemical reaction
Reactant
Substances produced by a chemical reaction (could be gas, precipitate, or a new solution)
Product
When a substance changes into one or more new substances
Chemical change
Color change, odor change, release of heat, has is treated, formation of precipitate (liquid turning solid, cottage cheese)
Signs that a chemical change has occurred.
