Chemistry Essentials - Atoms, Molecules and Free radicals Flashcards
What is atomic mass?
The total mass of an atom equal to the Protons + neutrons
What is the atomic mass of an electron?
0
What is the atomic mass of an neutron?
1
What is the atomic mass of an proton?

How are free radicals neutrialised?
Antioxidants neutralize free radicals by giving up some of their own electrons
What are free radicals?
oxygen-containing molecules with an uneven number of electrons
What is the threat of free radicals?
Their uneven number means they easily react with other molecules and cause large chain chemical reactions in your body. These reactions are called oxidation.
How do free radicals occur?
Oxidation when a chemical bond is broken and the molecule loses an electron
What diseases are linked to free radicals?
Cancer, arthritis, Alzheimer’s etc
Why does molecular mass matter in a medical sense?
A drug with a larger mass will take longer to be broken down by the body
