Anatomy and Physiology - Surface mapping of the Thorax and Abdomen Flashcards
What are the true ribs?
Ribs 1-7, that directly articulate with the sternum
What are the false ribs?
Ribs 8-10 that indirectly articulate with the sternum, as their costal cartilage connects with the seventh ribs
What are the floating ribs?
Ribs 11 and 12 which are not connected to the sternum
What is costal cartilage?
Segments of cartilage that connect the sternum to the ribs and help to extend the ribs forward
Where is the thorax?
.
Where is the mid-sagittal plane?
A vertical plane through the midline of the body that divides the body into right and left halves
Where is the para-sagittal plane?
A plane alongside or parallel to the sagittal plane
Where is the Midclavicular line?
It passes through the midpoint of the clavicle
Where is the costal margin?
The lower edge of the chest (thorax), formed by the bottom edge of the rib cage.
Where is the transpyloric plane?
Located midway between the jugular notch and superior border of pubic symphysis, at approximately the level of L1 vertebra in the lower back
Where is the costal plane?
.
Where is the Dome of Diaphragm?
.
Where is the Jugular notch?
The visible dip above the manubrium of the sternum
Where is the Sternal angle?
The joint formed where the manubrium and the body of the sternum connect
Where is the pleural cavity?
The space enclosed by the pleura, which is a thin layer of tissue that covers the lungs and lines the interior wall of the chest cavity
What are the vessels of the thorax?
.
