Biology Essentials - Prokaryotic cells Flashcards
How is the nucleus different in prokaryotic cells?
Nuceloid
What is the function of the cell wall?
Provides tensile strength and protection
What are plasmids?
A small, extrachromosomal DNA molecule is physically separated from chromosomal DNA
How do the sizes of ribosomes differ in prokaryotic cells?
In prokaryotic cells, the ribosomes are smaller, simpler and not bound by a membrane
What assists the prokaryotic cells in movement?
Pili and flagella
What do pili do?
Pili attach to surfaces and play a role in the transfer of genetic materials
What are the 2 main differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells?
Prokaryotic cells have no membrane-bound organelles so processes that usually happen in organelles take place in the cytoplasm. DNA in prokaryotes is circular, whereas DNA in eukaryotes is linear and arranged in chromosomes
What is photosynthesis?
A process by plants to convert light energy into chemical energy
What is the formula for photosynthesis?
Light + carbon dioxide + water = Glucose + oxygen
What is the chemical formula for glucose?
C6H12O6
