chemistry - combustion Flashcards
what is combustion?
Another word for burning. A fuel reacts with oxygen to release light and heat energy.
what is a fuel?
A substance that burns to release energy
give 3 examples of fuels
e.g alcohol, coal, wood, oil, natural gas, hydrogen, sugar
Does hydrogen react well with oxygen?
yes! hydrogen is a fuel that reacts well with oxygen.
Hydrogen + oxygen —-
—- water (H2O)
what are hydrocarbons?
Hydrocarbons are fossil fuels because they are made up of molecules containing carbon and hydrogen.
Hydrocarbons + Oxygen —–
—- carbon dioxide + water (fuel)
what is oxidation?
oxidation is when a substance (metal / non-metal) reacts with oxygen to form an oxide.
Iron + oxygen —-
—- iron oxide
what is an exothermic reaction?
a chemical reaction which gives out heat energy. The heat increases in temperature.
what are the 3 components in a fire triangle?
oxygen, fuel, heat
what happens if there is not enough oxygen in the air?
carbon will undergo incomplete combustion
when some of earths heat energy is trapped by greenhouse gasses what do you call this?
the greenhouse effect
oxygen + fuel — (complete or incomplete combustion?)
incomplete combustion — carbon monoxide + water
