biology - respiration and breathing Flashcards
What is the difference between breathing and respiration?
breathing is a physical reaction of getting air in and out of the lungs
respiration is a chemical reaction that releases energy
where does respiration occur?
the mitochondria
what are some adaptions of the red blood cell?
biconcave disk – increases surface area to store oxygen
haemoglobin – makes the cell red, protein that carries oxygen.
no nucleus – more space for haemoglobin
do arteries carry blood to or away from the heart?
away
which way do veins carry blood?
back to the heart
what is aerobic respiration?
Aerobic respiration occurs in the presence of oxygen and in most cells most of the time.
what is anaerobic respiration?
Anaerobic respiration occurs without oxygen and much less frequently than aerobic respiration.
glucose —
— lactic acid (this is anaerobic respiration)
