Chemistry Flashcards
What are the alkali metals
These are the elements in group 1 of the periodic table
What are the physical properties of alkali metals
Good conductors fo electricity, shiny when freshly cut, soft and have low melting points
What happens to alkali metals reactivity as you go down the group
The reactivity increases
What are the halogens
These are the elements in group 7
What happens when you go down group 7
Their melting and boiling points increase, intermolecular forces become stronger and more heat energy is needed
What happens when a metal reacts with a halogen
It creates a metal halide
What is oxidation
It is the loss of electrons and gain of oxygen
What is reduction
It is the gain of electrons and loss of oxygen
What are the noble gases
These are gases in group 0
What are the chemical properties of noble gases
They are unreactive ad they have a full outer shell
What must be increased to increase the rate of reaction
The frequency of successful collision must be greater
What other factors may increase rate of reaction
Pressure, temperature and surface area: volume ratio
What is an exothermic reaction
This is where a reaction has excess energy so it increases the surrounding temperature
Hat Flame Tests do we do
Red for lithium, yellow for sodium, lilac for potassium, orange for calcium, blue for copper
Hat Is a
Chohols functional group
