Chemistry Flashcards
What is an atom?
The simplest part of an element that can exist on its own
What are elements?
Materials that cannot be split into anything simpler by chemical methods
They only contain one type of atom
What is a molecule?
Has two or more atoms joined together
What are the properties of metallic elements?
Good conductors of electricity High melting and boiling points Good conductors of heat Shiny solids Usually malleable and ductile All are solids at room temperature except mercury
What are the properties of non metallic elements?
Poor conductors of heat Low melting and boiling points Poor conductors of electricity Usually dull Can be gas, solid or liquid at room temperature Tend to be soft and brittle
What is a compound?
A material that is made up of two or more different elements that are chemically joined together
What is a mixture?
Two or more substances mixed together which are easy to separate
What is the composition of air?
Oxygen-21%
Nitrogen-78%
Argon-0.9%
Carbon Dioxide-0.037%
What are the properties of oxygen?
Gas
Colourless
Odourless
What are the uses of oxygen?
Welding torches
Rocket fuel
Breathing apparatus in hospitals
What is the equation for respiration?
Sugar + oxygen > carbon dioxide + water (+energy)
What is the chemical test for water?
Use the chemical anhydrous copper sulphate which changes colour form white to blue in the presence of water
What is the equation for the preparation of oxygen?
Hydrogen peroxide >(manganese dioxide)> water + oxygen
What is the test for oxygen?
Delights a glowing splint
What is a catalyst?
A chemical which speeds up a chemical reaction whit hour being used up itself
