Chemistry 2.1 Flashcards
Different mixture processes.
Filtration process.
It is a mixture of water an an insoluble substance just like sand and can easily be separated by filtering. Sand and water poured into the filter funnel, which is in line with filter paper. The water is going to soak through the paper to gather in the beaker. The sand particle will not pass through the filter paper.
Evaporation process.
By dissolving salt in water we end up with a solution. The salt disappears in water. One way we can separate salt from water is by boiling it. The water will evaporate until it is all gone. The salt will be the only thing left behind.
Simple Distillation process.
Distillation is a method for separating the solvent from a solution. Water can separated from salt solution by simple distillation.
Crystallization process.
Crystallization takes place when a liquid substance changes to its solid form. The solution is heated up in a container, allowing the solvent to evaporate, leaving a saturated solution. A solution that has as much solid dissolved in it as it can possibly contain is called a saturated solution. As the solution is cooling down, the solid will slowly appear out of the solution and the crystals will start to grow. The crystals are then ready to be collected and dried.
Fractional distillation process.
Fractional distillation process is a process where a liquid from a mixture of two or more liquids is separated. Fractional distillation can be used to separate liquid ethanol from a mixture of ethanol and water. This works because the liquids have different boiling points. When they are heated (mixtures), the liquid will evaporate before the other.
Chromatography process.
Paper chromatography is a method to separate dissolved substances from one another. It is often used when the dissolved substances are colored. It works because of the colored substances dissolved into the solvent is used to be better than others.
- A pencil line is drawn and spot of ink or plant dye are placed on it.
- The paper is lowered into the solvent. Solvent travels up through the paper, taking some of the ink with it.
- As the solvent travels up the paper, the different colored inks and dyes are spread apart.
