Chemistry 13.5 Flashcards
What are carboxylic acids
A group of compounds with the -COOH functional group
What is the -COOH functional group
A carbon atom which forms a double bond with a lone oxygen atom and a single bond with an oxygen atom in an -OH group
How can you tell if a compound is a carboxylic acid
If it has a -COOH group or has ‘anoic acid’ at the end of its name
What happens when carboxylic acids react with carbonates
It produces carbon dioxide, a salt and water
What will the names of the salts produced by the reactions between carboxylic acids and carbonates end with
Anoate (methanoic acid forms a methanoate)
What happens when a carboxylic acid dissolves in water
They ionise and can release H+ ions which make the solution acidic
What is the functional group of esters
-COO-
How are esters formed
From an alcohol and a carboxylic acid in the presence of a strong acid catalyst
What is the other product when esters are formed
Water
