Chemical Testing Flashcards
1
Q
chlorine gas
A
- damp blue litmus paper
- turns red, then bleaches white
- wear a gas mask, do experiment in fume cupboard
2
Q
oxygen gas
A
- glowing splint
- relights
3
Q
hydrogen gas
A
- lit splint
- squeaky pop
4
Q
carbon dioxide gas
A
- bubble through limewater
- turns cloudy
5
Q
carbonate anions
A
- react substance w hydrochloric acid
- if carbonate ions present, CO2 will bubble out of solution
- bubble through limewater
- if it’s cloudy, CO2 is present, so ion is a carbonate
6
Q
- sulfate anions
A
- react substance with hydrochloric acid
- add barium chloride solution
- if sulphate ions are present, a white precipitate of barium sulfate will form
7
Q
halide anions
A
- react solution with nitric acid to remove carbonate or sulfite ions
- add silver nitrate
- white precipitate = chloride
- cream precipitate = bromide
- yellow precipitate = iodide
8
Q
lithium cation flame test
A
- dip platinum/nichrome wire loop in HCL, then heat over Bunsen burner
- dip wire loop into lithium
- hold it in blue part of flame (hottest)
- turns crimson
9
Q
sodium cation flame test
A
- dip platinum/nichrome wire loop in HCL, then heat over bunsen burner
- dip wire loop into sodium
- hold in blue part of flame (hottest)
- turns yellow
10
Q
potassium cation flame test
A
- dip platinum/nichrome wire loop in HCL, then heat over Bunsen burner
- dip wire into potassium
- hold it in blue part of the flame (hottest)
- turns lilac
11
Q
calcium cation flame test
A
- dip platinum/nichrome wire in HCL, then heat over Bunsen burner
- dip wire loop into calcium
- hold it in blue part of the flame(hottest)
- turns orange/red
12
Q
copper cation flame test
A
- dip platinum/nichrome wire loop in HCL, then heat over bunsen burner
- dip wire loop into copper
- hold it in blue part of flame (hottest)
- turns green
13
Q
copper (II) metal hydroxide cation
A
- react it with sodium hydroxide
- forms a blue precipitate
14
Q
calcium metal hydroxide cation
A
- react it with sodium hydroxide
- forms a white precipitate
15
Q
iron (II) metal hydroxide cation
A
- react it with sodium hydroxide
- forms a green precipitate
