Acids, Bases And Salts Flashcards
What is an acid? (1)
An acid reacts with a base to make a neutral solution
What is an acid? (2)
A proton donor
What is a base? (1)
A substance that will react with an acid to formal a neutral substance
What is a base? (2)
A proton acceptor
What is an alkali?
An alkali is a soluble base
What are alkalis?
All alkalis are bases, but only soluble bases are alkalis
What is the reaction between an acid and an alkali called?
Neutralisation
Acid + metal —>
Salt + hydrogen
Acid + carbonate
Salt + water + carbon dioxide
ACID + Metal oxides/hydroxides
SALT + WATER
ACID + ALKALI →
SALT + WATER
What is the precipitation experiment?
- Mix 2 solutions together
- Filter to isolate solid
- Wash with distilled water
- Dry in oven
What salts do you use titration for?
Sodium, potassium and ammonium
What salts use insoluble base + acid experiment?
All soluble salts except for sodium, potassium and ammonium
What is used in a precipitation reaction?
A nitrate and sodium, potassium or ammonium
