Chemical Reactions Target Sheet Flashcards
Know what to look for to see if a chemical reaction has occurred
Chemical Reactions involve colour changes, heating up ( releases energy ) or cooling down ( absorbes energy ), stinky emissions and even explosions
Give some examples of chemical reactions
- combustion
- oxidation
- neutralisation
- metals plus acids
- the rusting of iron
Know how chemical reactions can be started
Some chemical reactions require a flame or a spark
Explain the difference between a physical and chemical change
A physical change is reversible but chemical reactions are normally irreversible
Recall the difference between a reversible and irreversible reaction
A reversible reaction is when the new substance made can return to its original way
An irreversible reaction is when the new substance made can’t return to its original way
Know the meaning of reactant and product
Reactant = chemicals that combine together to make a new substance Product = the new substance made by the chemical reaction
Know the three things a fire needs to keep burning. The fire triangle
- Fuel
- Heat
- Oxygen
Know how a fire can be put out
A fire can be put out if a factor of the fire triangle is removed
Know some examples of fuels
- Wood
- Oil
- Coal
- Petrol
- Natural gas
Know what happens when a fuel burns
Combustion happens
Be able to write a word equation for burning
Fuel + Oxygen -> Carbon Dioxide + Water +(energy)
Know that burning uses oxygen
Combustion is burning in oxygen so oxygen is used up
Know a basic definition of a catalyst
A catalyst is a substance that speeds up a chemical reaction but does not involve in the chemical reaction so the catalyst is not used up it stays the same
Know what the words exothermic and endothermic means
Exothermic - is when the reaction gives out energy to the surroundings ( gets hot )
Endothermic - is when the reaction takes in energy ( temperature stays the same )
