chemical equilibrium Flashcards
chemical equilibrium
a state at which rates of forwards reactions and reverse reactions are equal and the concentrations of the reactants and products remain constant
why is equilibrium dynamic
the rate at which reactants become products and vice versa remains constant, and this activity is continuous
3 things necessary to establish equilibrium
reversible reaction
closed environment
constant temp
equilibrium constant
Keq
not all products will be converted ro reactants, vice versa
products/ reactants
Keq>1 favours forwards
Keq<1 favours reverse
favoured means higher # of moles and concentration
solids or liquids are given value of 1
how do you find Keq for reverse reaction
take reciprocal of forwards reaction
ex. Keqf = 280
Keqr = 1/280
what is le Chateliers Principle
states that if system at equilibrium is subjected to an external stress, the equilibrium will shift to minimize the effect of that stress
what are external stresses that will cause a shift
concentration
pressure
temperature
what is a catalyst
speeds up both forwards and reverse reactions, helps reach equilibrium sooner
Endothermic and exothermic
endo= heat on reactant side +H
increase temp shift right
decrease temp shift left
exo=heat on product side -H
increase temp shift left
decrease temp shift right
change in pressure
increase in pressure shift towards side with fewest moles
decrease in pressure shift towards side with most moles
=moles no change
what change in temp favours endo or exo reactions
endo increase reaction in temp
exo reaction decrease in temp
