Chemical Equilibria Flashcards
Dynamic equilibrium?
when forward and reverse reactions take place at the same rate and happen simultaneously
Chemical Equilibrium?
A dynamic equilibrium where the rate of the foreword reaction is equal to the rate of the reverse reaction
Reversible reaction
When the products can be converted back into the reactants
A closed system?
the system is isolated from its surrounding environment in such a way that there is no transfer Of mass into and out. of the system.
Open system?
one in which mass or energy can be transferred into or out of the system during a reaction
Le Chatelier’s Principle?
When the equilibrium of a closed system ls disturbed, the system will reinstate a new equilibrium that favours the reaction that opposes the disturbance
what does it mean if the forward reaction is favored?
rate of the forward reac is greater than the rate of the reverse reac → conC. of substances on the left will decrease and the conc. of substances on the right will increase
equilibrium shifts to the right
What does it mean if the reverse reaction favored?
rate of the reverse reaction is greater than the rate of the forward reac → conC. of substances on the right will decrease and the conc. of substances on the left will increase
equilibrium shifts to the left
Factors that affect equilibrium position ?
Concentration
teMp
pressure
catalyst
effect of changing concentration on equilibrium → discuss a change in corc. of products and reactants
discuss le chatelier and general > change in concentration > favoured reaction > equilibrium direction > all conc. Increase > equil restored
effect of temp on eqUil ?
+ H value → endothermic
-H value → exothermic
- reverse is opposite
increase temp → endohermic reaction favoured
decrease temp → exothermic reaction favoured
Will move to Stabilize new temp
Effect of pressure ON equilibrium
only affects gases
Increase pressure→Equil will move to side with lower number of moles
decrease pressure → Equil moves to side with most number of moles
Effect of catalyst on equilibrium?
Increase rate of reverse and forward reactions equally → doesnt affect equilibrium
Equilibrium owy headed sooner IF Catalyst added to a system not already in equilibrium.
