CHEMICAL, BIOLOGICAL, AND RADIOLOGICAL WARFARE Flashcards
CHEMICAL WARFARE
The employment of chemical agents intended for use in military operations to kill, seriously injure, or incapacitate personnel due to their physiological effect.
TYPES OF CHEMICAL AGENTS
1) Nerve Agents
2) Blister Agent
3) Blood Agents
4) Choking Agents
NERVE AGENTS
Liquid casualty agents that disrupt nerve impulses tot he body while damaging body functions rather than tissue.
BLISTER AGENTS
Liquid of solid casualty agents that can cause inflammation, blisters, and general destruction of tissues which often results in temporary blindness and/or death.
BLOOD AGENTS
Gaseous casualty agents that attack the enzymes carrying oxygen in the blood stream.
CHOKING AGENTS
Gaseous or liquid casualty agents with initial symptoms that include tears, dry throat, nausea, vomiting, and headache.
M9 CHEMICAL AGENT DETECTOR PAPER
Detects the presence of liquid chemical agents by turning reddish color.
ATROPINE/2-PAM CHLORIDE AUTO INJECTOR
Used as specific therapy for nerve agent casualties. Issued for intramuscular injection, self-aid or first aid.
BIOLOGICAL WARFARE
The use of agents to cause diseases, sickness, or death reducing the effectiveness of the opposing combatant forces.
TYPES OF BIOLOGICAL AGENTS
1) Pathogens
Such as bacteria and viruses.
2) Toxins
Such as animal venoms and plant toxins.
TRAINING AND AWARENESS OF PERSONNEL
The primary way to limit the chemical and biological warfare impact.
RADIOLOGICAL WARFARE
The deliberate use of radiological weapons to produce widespread injury and death of all life.
TYPES OF NUCLEAR EXPLOSIONS
1) High Altitude
Air burst occurs at altitudes in over 100K feet with ionosphere disruptions and EMP.
2) Air Burst
Fireball does not reach the surface.
3) Surface Burst
Fireball touching the surface with massive radioactive fallout.
4) Shallow Underwater Burst
Small fireball and blast wave causing large waves and water contamination.
5) Deep Underwater Burst
Less visual effect and yields greater contaminated water.
2 SHIPBOARD SHIELDING STATIONS
1) Ready Shelter
Just inside the skin of the ship.
2) Deep Shelter
Low in the ship and near the centerline.
DT-60 DOSIMETER
A non-self reading high range casualty dosimeter. Measures gamma radiation between 0-600 roentgens.
