Chemical analysis Flashcards
What is chromatography used for?
It’s used to separate the substances in complex mixtures. It works as substances travel at different speeds due to their size, polarity etc.
How are the components identified?
They can be identified by the distance they have travelled or by the time it has take to travel through the apparatus. (retention time)
describe the term Volumetric analysis:
The volumetric analysis uses a solution of accurately known concentration in a reaction to determine the concentration of another.
Whats the use of a titration experiment?
They are used to accurately determine the volumes of a solution thats required to reach the end point of a chemical reaction. The concentration can be calculated by knowing the volume.
What is a standard solution?
Its a solution of accurately known concentrations
What is the use of redox titrations?
They are used to determine the unknown concentration of a solution.
Why are indicators not always needed to determine the end-point of a reaction?
The solution may self indicate.
What is an example of when an indicator is not needed?
Acidified permanganate is purple but turns colourless when reduced.
