Alcohols Flashcards
Whats the functional group in an alcohol?
Hydroxyl ( -OH)
Name the first 8 Alcohols
Methanol (CH3OH) , Ethanol (C2H5OH), Propan-1-ol (C3H7OH), Butan-1-ol (C4H9OH) , Pentan-1-ol (C5H11OH), Hexan-1-ol (C6H13OH) , heptan-1-ol (C7H15OH) and octan-1-ol (C8H17OH).
Primary Alcohols
The OH group (hydroxyl) is attached to a carbon that is attached to one other carbon.
The Hydroxyl is at the end of the molecule.
Secondary Alcohols
The OH group (hydroxyl) is attached to a carbon that is attached to two other carbons.
Tertiary Alcohols
The OH group (hydroxyl) is attached to a carbon that is attached to three other carbons.
How do you recognise a Diol?
An alcohol with two hydroxyl groups.
How do you recognise a Triol?
Its an alcohol with three hydroxyl groups.
What is the effect a Hydroxyl group has on the alcohols physical properties?
The more hydroxyl groups present the higher the melting and boiling points will be, this is because there are more hydrogen bonds present.
