Chem Vocab Ch.3 Flashcards
Decomposition
Matter dividing into smaller amounts of new substances
The Law of Mass Conservation
Matter cannot be created or destroyed; it can only changes form
Nonmetals
Elements that are typically brittle, lack luster, and do not conduct electricity
Law of Definite Proportions
The proportion of elements in any compound is always the same
Continuous Theory of Matter
Substances were composed of long, unbroken blobs of matter, can divide it in half forever
Law of Multiple Proportions
If two elements combine to form different compounds, the ratio of masses of the second element that reaches a fixed mass of the first element will be a simple, whole-number ratio
Metalloids
Elements that have some metal properties and some that have nonmetal properties.
Discontinues Theory of Matter
Matter is composed of tiny individual parts.
Chemical Symbol
the abbreviation for an atom
Elements
Any substances that cannot be decomposed into less massive substances
Qualitative Measurements
Not an exact amount
Quantitative Measurements
An exact amount
Compound
Substances that can be decomposed into elements
