Chapter 12 Test Flashcards
Define pressure and 3 ways to measure it
Pressure: force extered on or against an object by something in contact with it.
Torr, mmHg, Pa, kPA, atms
What is Boyles Law
A gas law, stating that the preassure and volume of a gas have an inverse relationship
Which of the laws studied in this module leads to the kelvin temp scale
Charles Law
What general rule must a careful scientist follow when extrapolating data
can only extrapolate data when the amount of data is large compared to extrapolation
What are the properties of idea glas
The molecules (or atoms) that make up an ideal gas must be small compared to the volume
available to the gas. The gas molecules (or atoms) must be so far apart that they do not attract or repel
each other. Also, all collisions that occur must be elastic
Under what conditions do gases behave ideally
Gases behave ideally when their pressure is near or lower than 1.00 atm and when their temperature
is near or higher than 273K.
What is STP
1.00 Atm, 273 K
Two steel containers of equal volume contain two different gases at the same temperature. The first
container holds 1.3 moles of N2 gas and the second contains 1.3 moles of SO3 gas. Compare the
pressures of the two containers.
They have the same pressure
A liquidís temperature is lowered from 50 oC to 10 oC. Did the the liquidís vapor pressure increase,
decrease, or stay the same during that time?
When the temperature of a liquid is lowered, its vapor pressure lowers. Thus, the vapor pressure
decreased.
The mole fraction of nitrogen gas in compressed air is 0.78. If you have 1,000 molecules of
compressed air, how many will be nitrogen molecules?
780 will be nitrogen
