Chem test jan 23 Flashcards
What is pH used for in chemsitry?
It is used to distinguish between different solutions.
What is a solution?
A solution is a mixture of one or more solutes dissolved in in a solvent.
Solutions can be?
Acid, alkali or neutral.
pH is measured on a scale between?
0 -14.
Some acids found at home are?
Viniger, Lemon juice and Ketchup.
Some acids found in the lab are?
Hydrochloric acid, Nitric acid and Sulfuric acid.
Some alkalis found at home are?
Baking soda, Bleach and indigestion tablets.
Some alkalis found in the lab are?
Sodium hydroxide, Calcium hydroxide and Sodium hydroxide.
Some examples of neutrals are?
Water and eggs.
What can be obtained during the neutralisation reaction?
Salt.
How is does this reaction cure indigestion?
To cure indigestion, which is caused by to much stomach acid, indigestion tablets neutralise the sto,ach as they contain a alkaline called magnesiam hydroxide.
Rainwater is usually?
Slightly acidic, with the pH of 5 or 6.
Why is rain usually slightly acidic?
A naturally occuring chemical, carbon dioxide, Is very soluble and dissolves to create an acidic solution.
What causes acid rain?
Burning fossil fuels and sulfur, This releases carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide. These gases dissolve into water and this causes acid rain, basically makes the rain to acidic.
